Natural gas is a relatively new resource in Israel’s economic landscape. Since the significant discoveries of the Tamar and Leviathan gas fields in 2009 and 2010, Israel has been actively engaged in public and policy discussions regarding its natural gas resources.
If current projections are accurate, Israel will rank 92nd globally in proven natural gas reserves. The country's potential reserves are estimated at around 2,000 billion cubic meters (bcm), spread across seven fields, with the Tamar and Leviathan reservoirs containing approximately 20% of that volume. These resources are expected to meet Israel's domestic energy needs for at least three decades.
